Seoul’s Women Friendly City Project Won the 2010 UN Public Service Award

Women Friendly City Project (WFCP) of Seoul is recognized as the best practice at the 2010 United Nation's Public Service Award. The project won the first place among Asian-pacific nominees in the category I: Improving transparency, accountability and responsiveness in the public service. The representatives from Seoul join in the 2010 UN Public Service Day- Award Ceremony and Forum to be held in Barcelona from 22 June to 24.

 

The WFCP has promoted a holistic approach to the urban policy based on gender responsiveness, which aims to ameliorate "inconvenient, insecure, uncomfortable, and unequal" conditions in female citizens' daily lives. It ensures equal rights for women in work, caring, culture, and health, and the equal participation of female citizens in decision-making process of the overall urban policy area. Since 2007, it conducted over 90 programs in 5 major areas: Caring, Abundant, Affluent, Safe, and Convenient Seoul. Some of the best programs are as follows: "Mom is Excited" - 28,000 jobs were created for female professionals who wanted to come back to work after their child rearing-, "Certification of Women Friendly Workplaces," "Seoul-customized Childcare Centers" - private childcare facility improvement project-, "Safety Audit" - women friendly restrooms, parking lots, streets, and parks etc.

 

The WFCP was appraised as effective in promoting equity, transforming administration with innovative methods and tools, and introducing a new concept for transparency, accountability and responsiveness in the public service. It is promised that Seoul join in the city to city and global cooperation for women's urban rights issues more actively after the 2010 PSA winning.
