Strategic agreement between Metropolis and UCLG-ASPAC
The organisations of United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), UCLG-ASPAC and Metropolis have reached an agreement for joint membership fees in Asia-Pacific*. This will simplify the process of membership for all cities and metropolitan regions with more than 1 million inhabitants in the region. One single fee for all the metropolises in Asia-Pacific to become active member of the World’s leading local and regional government associations.
The following 12 members have automatically joined Metropolis in 2008 after this agreement: Beijing, Daegu, Dalian, Harbin, Hunan Province, Incheon, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Surabaya, Taichung, and Taipei.
The agreement
All current and new members (cities or regions) of Metropolis and UCLG-ASPAC with more than one million inhabitants will automatically become members of the three organisations (UCLG, UCLG-ASPAC and Metropolis).
UCLG, UCLG-ASPAC and Metropolis will actively work to ensure that membership increases within the Asia Pacific region and will ensure that this unified membership is clearly promoted in all literature.
Metropolis and UCLG-ASPAC will collaborate in the promotion of development opportunities for members in Asia Pacific.
Membership Fees
Metropolis will take on administration of membership fees at their annual contribution rate and at the end of each month will transfer 50% of the fees received (30% to UCLG-ASPAC and 20% to UCLG).
This will allow all cities and regions in Asia-Pacific* with more than 1 million inhabitants to pay a single membership fee. For implementation purposes cities and metropolises over 3 million population has taken effect for 2008 and those between 1 and 3 million will be covered from January 1, 2009.
Metropolises affected by this agreement belong to the following countries and income categories:
Category A: Australia, Japan, Korea Republic, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore.
Category B: China, Thailand.
Category C: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Korea PDR, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Vietnam.
(*) This agreement does not include members from the Middle East and Eurasia.
